Care Guide

A few simple steps to keep your pegs performing beautifully for years. Proper care extends the life of your products and helps reduce waste.

Getting the Most from Your Pegs

Our clothes pegs are designed for durability, but a little care goes a long way. Here are some general tips to keep them in excellent condition.

  • Avoid overloading. Use one peg per item edge for lightweight fabrics, and two pegs for heavier items like towels and jeans. This prevents unnecessary stress on the spring.
  • Open and close gently. While our springs are built to withstand thousands of uses, a gentle squeeze is all that's needed. Forcing pegs open wider than necessary can weaken the mechanism over time.
  • Clean periodically. Wipe your pegs with a dry or slightly damp cloth every few months to remove dust and residue. Avoid soaking wooden pegs in water — a quick wipe is sufficient.
  • Inspect regularly. Check your pegs every few months for any signs of wear. Replace any that show splintering or a weakened grip to protect your fabrics.

Weather & Storage

While our birchwood pegs are treated for weather resistance, proper storage between uses will significantly extend their lifespan.

Summer

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause natural wood to dry and potentially crack. If you leave pegs on the line during summer months, consider storing them in a peg bag between loads to shield them from UV exposure.

Autumn & Winter

Cold, damp conditions are the greatest challenge for wooden pegs. Bring pegs indoors during prolonged wet spells, or store them in a weatherproof peg bag. Our Premium Peg Bag is designed specifically for this purpose — the weatherproof fabric protects pegs even when left on the line.

Indoor Storage

If you prefer to bring pegs indoors between uses, store them in a dry, ventilated space. A simple basket, drawer, or our peg bag works perfectly. Avoid airtight containers — some air circulation helps prevent moisture build-up.

Materials Guide

Birchwood

Birch is a hardwood prized for its fine, even grain and natural resistance to splitting. It is stronger and more durable than the softwood (often pine or beech) used in mass-market pegs. Our birchwood is sourced from sustainably managed European forests.

Stainless Steel Springs

The spring is the most vulnerable component of a traditional clothes peg. We use stainless steel grade springs that resist rust and corrosion, even in coastal environments. This means no rust marks on your fabrics — ever.

Non-Metal Options

Our Non-Metal Clothes Pegs use an innovative composite spring mechanism that eliminates metal entirely. This makes them ideal for coastal areas where salt air accelerates corrosion, or for anyone who wants absolute assurance that no metal will contact their fabrics.

Soft Grip Coating

Our Soft Grip Pegs feature a rubberised surface that provides ergonomic comfort and a stronger hold. The coating is UV-stabilised and will not peel or degrade under normal use.

Cleaning Your Pegs

If your pegs accumulate dirt, pollen, or tree sap, cleaning is simple:

  1. Dampen a soft cloth with warm water.
  2. Add a tiny drop of mild washing-up liquid if needed.
  3. Wipe each peg, paying attention to the grip area and spring.
  4. Dry immediately with a clean cloth or leave to air-dry on a towel.

Important: Never soak wooden pegs in water, and never put them in a washing machine or dishwasher. Prolonged water exposure will cause the wood to swell and may weaken the spring mechanism.
